FEAST OF THEASSUMPTION OF MARY
AUGUST 15, 2022
Holy Days on Monday
When a Holy Day of Obligation falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation to participate in Mass is suspended. There are two exceptions to this norm, Christmas (Dec. 25th, because it is the celebration of Our Lord’s birth) and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (Dec. 8th, because she is the patroness of the U.S.A.).
Feast of the Assumption + Aug. 15th
Therefore, this year, as the Feast of the Assumption of Mary (Aug. 15th) falls on a Monday, there is no obligation to participate in Mass for this feast. Because of the importance and beauty of this feast, everyone is encouraged to participate in Mass for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on Sunday, Aug. 14th, Vigil Mass at 5:30pm or on Monday, Aug. 15th at 8:15am or 5:30pm --- but it is not required. It remains a “Holy Day” but not a “Day of Obligation”.
Sunday Evening Mass at 5:30pm
We will have our usual Sunday 5:30pm Mass however, the Scriptures, prayers and music will be for the Feast of the Assumption. Those attending the Sun., 5:30pm Mass do fulfill their Sunday obligation and do not have to come to any other Mass that Sunday. Because the holy day obligation is suspended the Sunday duty is met even though the Scriptures, prayers and music are different.
